Frequently
Asked Questions - Search engine optimization (SEO) and Web
marketing.
1. What is search engine
optimization(SEO)?
SEO is the process of editing and organizing the content
of a website so it scores high in the ranking algorithms of common
search engines (Google, Yahoo, MSN/Bing). A high scoring website
will appear at or near the top of searches. The algorithms used
by search engines are quite sophisticated and continuously evolving.
Many web site designers are very adept at communicating the marketing
messages "within" the site, but professional SEO firms
ensure that the content of the site is properly structured so it
ranks high with the search engines. A strong web site on it's own,
is only useful if people already know. A strong ranking in the search
engines drives people to your site that may not have known about
your company.
2. How do search engines work?
The search engines use what is called a Spider or
Robot to scan the pages of each and every website including yours
and record the information available in their data base. Remember
that search engines such as Google are basically websites much like
yours only the service they provide is to accumulate information
about websites and Rank those sites using their sophisticated algorithms
to decide which sites should show at the top of their directory
when a search is made for a particular Keyword or term. Having your
website optimized is the best way to insure that the spider or Robot
doesn't miss any of the valuable information that would put you
at the top of their organic listings.
3. I just had a new Website created and it looks
great why do I now need to do more?
A great looking website that is easy to navigate is
important, however the search engines do not reward you based on
looks and visual aspects such as Flash which can actually hurt your
ranking. It won't matter how good your website looks if nobody can
find you and you will need search engines like Google to generate
new visits and ultimately new clients.
4. What is Pay Per Click
(PPC) advertising?
All search engines and directories make space along
the right side and across the top of there listing for Paid listing
of websites. These listing are also known as "Sponsored Links"
and the ads listed are usually relevant to the subject you first
typed into the search window. If you want to have your website listed
in the sponsored links then you have to open an account with each
individual search engine and basically bid more than the person
below you to move higher in those listings. Google Adwords is the
best known PPC advertising program and like their "Organic
Listings" it does get the largest percentage of PPC traffic.
5. Is Pay Per Click a good way to get quality traffic
to my website?
Yes of course it is, although the percentage of people
who use search engines to find websites will click on the main organic
listings, sponsored links still bring quality traffic to the websites
listed. PPC listings are particularly useful for websites that have
not been optimized and therefore do not show in the main organic
listings and to get exposure for keywords that would not normally
get you listed on the major search engines. Just remember that you
do have to pay the search engine every time someone clicks on your
listing and that the click thru. rate of these listings is significantly
lower than that of organic listings.
6. Does Spider Choice manage these PPC. campaigns
for clients?
Yes of course we do and although the search engines
have set up the software of their PPC programs so individuals or
companies can manage their own campaigns, you are paying for each
click and some clients feel more comfortable with an experienced
company like Spider Choice looking after their PPC accounts.
7. Will I need to use PPC forever?
Once we have optimized your website and we have you
ranked high on the search engine organic listings we would recommend
a reduced budget for the PPC listings or possibly pausing your account
to be used in the future for other products or services that you
may want to add to your site. Our goal is to get you as much qualified
traffic as possible for the least amount of money and that means
using all means provided by search engines.
8. What is Google PR rank?
Google asigns a Page Rank (PR) to all pages that they
index and it is their way of deciding the page's importance. They
use a scale of 0/0 for poor quality and 10/10 which is basically
impossible to achieve as they only rank themselves as 8/10. Spider
choice will do an evaluation of all the pages of your website to
see if the PR rank needs to be improved and make recommendations
as to how we can improve it.
9. Is optimization a one-time thing?
No. The algorithms change often to filter out abusive.
Also, your competition/other sites may change their content so that
it temporarily pushes down your listing. An ongoing SEO arrangement
is highly recommended to ensure your site not only gets to the top
of the rankings...but stays there.
10. How much does SEO cost?
SEO cost can vary drastically from site to site with
the range being from a few hundred dollars per month to a several
thousand dollars per month. There are many criteria that can affect
this cost. The complexity of your site, the number of pages and
the keywords you want to achieve ranking in are just a few of the
areas that would need to be reviewed prior to pricing.

Frequently
Asked Questions about Website design, hosting and domain names.
1. What do I need to get a website up and
running?
The 3 basic things you actually need to get
started are a domain name (URL), a web site of course and a web
hosting service.
2. How do I register a domain name?
First you need to do a name search to determine
if the name you want is available and then talk about domain name
extensions (i.e. .com, .ca, etc). Next you need to choose a registrar
and register the domain name that was available in your search.
Make sure that all spellings are correct at the time of your search
and registration as they will only tell you if it is available not
if it is
correct. If you are unsure about what is best for you we can recommend
registrars as prices vary greatly or we can register the name for
you.
3. What is web hosting?
Web hosting is an Internet service that provides
web space on a server for your website files and makes it accessible
on the World Wide Web. Web hosting is typically billed monthly,
quarterly or annually. Make sure you pick your hosting company carefully
as it is your email service as well as your actual site that must
be reliable. Web hosting can also have an affect on how search engines
rank your site.
4. Is the hosting of my Website important
to search engines?
Yes it can help or hurt your ranking with search
engines, Spider Choice will do an analysis of your hosting service
to make sure it is right for your website and the geographic location
you wish to market in.
5. How much does a
website cost?
The cost of a website depends on how large and
complicated the website is. If your website requires a lot of graphic
work, specialized programming, a database, etc, it will cost more.
Take a look at our Spider
Choice design packages to get an idea of starting cost. The
web site design is a one time cost, however to maintain a website,
there will be ongoing maintenance fees. Depending if the updates
are on a fixed schedule, we provide these services on a monthly
contract or on a per hour basis. Remember that a fully functioning
web site is not the same as a Search Engine Optimized (SEO) web
site.
